Cooking Is Something That Many People D Essay Cooking is something that many people do. Some do it as a profession, some do it for fun, and some do it because they have to. Most people cook because eating anything raw is unappetizing and boring. I cook because it is entertaining and almost hypnotizing in a sense that I become almost oblivious to my surroundings. Sadly, some times I share the feeling of most people, ? gwhy o why do I have bother to do this. ?h But even if preparing a dish for themselves, people tend to get caught up and forget about anything else that is going on. When other people are the ones who will be enjoying the dish, the cook tends to have a feeling of wanting to make them astounded or awed at his or her culinary skills by preparing a better dining experience. It is a constant struggle for perfection and creativity. In the professional environment of cooking, the atmosphere is exigent. It is a fast moving and demanding environment. When working in such a place, one is soon to forget the time that is passing. As the product of the chef is taking shape, it looks more and more like a piece of art, with an amazing array of colour topped with astonishing garnishes. Chefs are people endlessly exploring the continual horizon of creativity in which the food can spread in any direction of space atop a plate. Another great part of cooking is the faces, comments, and reactions of the diners. Their faces are filled with the expression that speaks the flavour of the food and the opinion of the people themselves. A picture is worth a thousand words. I always remember that phrase when the food is served in front of the diner. And after that they speak. Their words persuade and encourage you for a higher level of achievement. Well at least most of the time. These are the reasons why culinary arts is an amazing field for anyone.

John Dewey Essay example -- American Philosopher Philosophy

John Dewey was one of the greatest minds in history. A philosopher, his concern was democracy and its ideals. A thinker about the problems in education. A prominent voice in America, commanding the admiration of those who agreed with his views, and respect for his mind even from those who did not. The man: John Dewey, an American philosopher. Dewey’s pedagogy was one with three distinctive traits: it was democratic in that it called for pluralism. It was a follower of the scientific method in that it was a systemic approach at solving problems and forming judgments, both practical and moral. It prized directed experience as an ongoing process of means as ends and ends as means. These three traits of Dewey’s philosophy are tied to all that he wrote and thought. Dewey felt that democracy was the ideal social structure, the one best suited to the needs and aims of all people; under no other political scheme was it possible for general citizens to have allowance and responsibility to grow individually and culturally. All other systems hindered personal and social growth in Dewey’s scheme. Any form of despotic state used fear to such an extent that it became one of the only factors that kept the state in union, and the other factors that would naturally cause people to work together in their social environments were perverted and wasted. â€Å"Instead of operating on their own account they are reduced to mere servants of attaining pleasure and avoiding pain† (DE, 84). The cultural paralysis was seen in the fact that â€Å"there is no free play back and forth among the members of the social group. Stimulation and response are exceedingly one-sided.† Both the rich and poor suffer: the poor in that they have little involvement in the courses taken in their lives; the rich in that their â€Å"culture becomes sterile† (DE, 84). Dewey asserted that â€Å"democracy has always been allied with humanism, with faith in the potentials of human nature† and that â€Å"democracy means the belief that humanistic culture should prevail.† He advised that democracy is not something that will necessarily happen if â€Å"human nature is left to itself, when freed from external arbitrary restriction† (FC, 97). Democracy, for Dewey, was a moral issue that required efforts born in democratic vision. Democracy was Dewey’s tool of progress. But Dewey also saw that democracy did not guarantee progress. The imper... ...nt. Otherwise facts gained only have the potential to gain meaning, and many facts will turn out to be disconnected, never finding their place in a person’s experience. Facts grow naturally out of meaningful experience, but meaningful experience which leads to more facts do not necessarily flow from facts. Dewey wrote that â€Å"the tragic weakness of the present school is that it endeavors to prepare future members of the social order in a medium in which the conditions of the social spirit are eminently wanting† (SSCC, 15). The conditions wanting were democracy, rational judgment conducive of the scientific method, and a conception of experience that recognizes the continuous nature of ends as means of further action. What Dewey wanted was ideal, but it was not utopian. He knew that we should do better, that we could do better. The question was more whether there was a will to do better. Affirmative Action Essay

What would the business world be like with no affirmative action? One can only imagine the discrimination that would be going on. This is why our company needs to take action towards taking the right steps to implementing this very important concept. Not only must we follow equal employment opportunity laws, but we must ensure the comfort, security, and safety of our employees. No person regardless of age, race, color, religion, disability, or sex be denied of employment based on those factors. With the implementation of the affirmative action policy taking affect within our company, we can expand our family of employees to a much more diverse workforce. We will gain a plethora of knowledge from those with all different types of prior work experiences. Our actions will lead to unity and harmony between those who are of different national origins, and will help eliminate discrimination on the job. It is incredibly important for those we employ to know we take pride in our company and care about their opinions, concerns, and well-being. Happy and well taken care of employees, make for enthusiastic and productive employees! The idea is to hire people based on their experience, knowledge of the occupation, education, and whatever skills they may encompass. It is important for employees to know some of the basic skills required for the job; however, on the job training is an excellent opportunity for growth and learning new techniques. Affirmative action allows for room for advancement to those with seniority within the company, as well as room to hire more new employees to fill their old positions. By enforcing affirmative action we are creating job security which encourages employees to strive to constantly improve and create goals within the company which benefits everyone involved. Affirmative Action3 As positive as affirmative action can be, there can also be negative results of this concept. In some cases, one protected class may be considered as favored by employers, while others feel they have been prejudged which has become known as reverse discrimination. Because of any one group being favored, the possibilities of conflict occurring in the work place could rise; for this reason, it is extremely important to apply and use the concept of affirmative action the way it was meant to be used. Each and every individual must be treated fairly, and situations will be dealt with according to the position they hold within the company. Equally as wrong as preferential treatment are those companies who sometimes are either forced or volunteer for affirmative action; they are only trying to fill their quota to meet requirements, which also eventually leads to more discrimination. As long as we take all of the appropriate steps to work this into our workforce and are doing it for all of the right reasons, we will have a successful multicultural corporation who can work together peacefully. The reason this policy would benefit our company is mainly because we are being given the opportunity to fix past instances of discrimination which have occurred within our establishments. We have the chance to start with a clean slate, and be known as an inviting and stable place to work. By implementing affirmative action we can ensure to our employees that they will enjoy working for us. By knowing what to expect every day they will be happier, loyal, enthusiastic, supportive, and eager to come back. They will gain an appreciation for the company which treats them with respect and equal to their coworkers. The positive possibilities are endless as long as everyone is compliant with the policy. There will be an individual to monitor and make sure all policy regulations are being followed and cooperated with, as well as an Affirmative Action  informative document which explains all details. We will encourage all to be involved in programs or groups which will lead to meeting goals related to the policy. And last but not least, there will be a mandatory meeting to ensure that everyone is fully aware of the changes to come and that any  further instances of discrimination in the workplace will not be tolerated.
